Have You Seen These Fabrics?
Armed with Paulette’s sample layout and my additional design plans, I took inventory of all the fabric I received with the kit.
The box included the two biggest chunks of fabric needed for the quilt: the red background fabric, and the backing fabric (black with dark red flowers).
The other fabrics for the blocks took a lot longer to inventory. In the main 13 x 13 grid of blocks, Paulette had planned to use a whopping 77 different fabrics.
16 of those fabrics (pictured above) were no longer in the box.
At first, I thought, “ooooh, shopping time” … but my first attempt to find replacement fabrics was pretty discouraging.
It turns out that Paulette purchased the original fabrics back in 2002, when the reds were brick, the greens were sage, and cream was the light neutral of choice.
Today, mod is in, and it’s near impossible to find anything but tomato soup red, lime green, and blindingly bright white.
Add to that the fact that I’m looking for non-mod, small-scale, Civil War-era prints, and I’m worried about finding anything even close.
So today I’m putting out an appeal to the quilting masses. Does anyone have a good source for fabrics similar to any of the ones above? Or some small amount of these actual fabrics that you’re willing to part with?
Here are the details on the original fabrics. Thanks to Paulette’s super organized notes, I have info on the fabric line for most of these missing fabrics.

* Paulette had planned to use this fabric for the center block of the quilt, but the design for the center block sort of looks like a target sight to me, so I’d be perfectly happy to use fabric without pictures of people or small animals for this one.
Let’s talk. You can have any chunk you need from my stash…
I’m totally taking you up on this, Marissa. Let’s get together soon.
Desert Quilt in Arizona has older fabrics
Thanks, Sharon, but Arizona’s quite a drive, and I didn’t see them online. Do you know of anywhere local with a good selection of reproduction or reproduction-like fabrics? I did pretty well at Keepsake Cottage Fabrics in Bothell, but haven’t had much luck anywhere else.
Betsy.
I have at least 1 blue bin of Civil War type fabric, not all absolute reproductions but similar to some of yours. I would be happy to show them to you. I made that Underground Railroad pattern from Elinor Burns about the same time as your fabric was acquired.
Thanks, Deanna! I don’t think all of mine are official reproductions either … I’ve just been going for not-super-modern-looking.
Oooh! An excuse to go paw through my fabrics?! I’ll be back later!
