The Low Bar

Nothing fit together right on this bout of sashing. Blocks K1 and K2 were the worst. I’m giving myself a pass on K2 (bottom right), since it was made so long ago, but I’m really embarrassed about how off K1 (bottom left) was, since I only made it a couple of months ago (in January).

I think the problem is that K1 was the block where I tried to mix-and-match stamped pieces with pencil-marked pieces. The block is a solid 1/8″ too small, and the pencil-marked pieces do indeed “puff out” compared to the stamp-marked pieces.

It’s official – I cannot mix and match the two marking methods going forward.

The other two blocks in this batch went marginally better, but it was a pretty low bar to clear.

Block J1 (top left) was done so long ago that I didn’t even have stitching lines marked on the outside of the block. I added some just prior to sashing, but the appliquéd diamonds weren’t as nicely lined up as I’d hoped, and the whole block feels a little wonky now that it’s (mostly) encased in sashing strips.

Block J2 (top right) was the best of the bunch, but again, it was a low bar. I struggle with diamond in a square blocks in general, and this one was no exception. I worked hard to not cut off any points, but still end up with a block the correct size.

The end result for J2? One point is cut off, and the corner triangles puff out more than I’d like. At least it’ll keep the puffy bars on K1 from looking so out of place.

  1. I think the blocks and sashing look great and your are entirely too hard on yourself in reflection. Some blocks are just the way they are and we beat them into submission. LOL! I love following your journey with this baby Jane. I am in the process (again) of trying to kit up a few to take on a long trip. Happy Sewing. Dawne

    1. Yes, Dawne! As I experience more stress in other areas of my life, I find it very satisfying to “beat” (or press, or stitch) those troublemaking blocks into submission. 🙂
