The Sashay

As mentioned in my last blog article, this last bit of the square block sashing got off to a rocky start. And I knew it was going to be a marathon sashing session, because once this set of four blocks was sashed, it could be stitched to the four next to it, then to the eight beneath it, which could be stitched to the 20-block and 16-block sections below that, which could then be stitched to the 117-block section to the right of that.

And of course, I was up against my self-imposed tenth anniversary deadline.

I finished this little four-block set of sashing six days before the anniversary, and I figured it would take me two days (Sunday and Monday) to finish the final block. So, I gave myself four days to see how far I could get on attaching this bit of sashing to the other bits of sashing I had completed.

I was making some good progress on Wednesday, getting the 16-block section at top left completed after work. At that point, I had just four (albeit large) sections to sew together.

And then I got sick. Like stay home from work and sleep for two days sick. This was not boding well for finishing the sashing of the center section like I planned.

On Friday night, I finally started feeling better and made a little progress before bedtime.

Since the fabric for the final block still had to be prewashed, I figured I would just keep stitching until the laundry was done on Saturday night. And by the time the dryer buzzed, I was so close to done that I just wrapped it up.

It’s super exciting that the finished section is too big to photograph on my bed, even standing on a stool. I had to get my family members to dangle it over the railing on the back deck:

And I’ve just now noticed that it’s being dangled sideways. Oh well, I’ll make sure they’re holding it right side up for the final photo when the quilt top is done.

In the meantime, I’m sash-aying my way to the finish line. There’s just one more block to go, and then the (hopefully not too) slow slog to get all the borders attached. On to the last block!
